Piano Lessons
Learn to play the fun and easy way! McConnell teaches beginning through intermediate students at his home studio in Salem, MA.
(Advanced students are encouraged to have lessons on the pianos with which they are most familiar.)
Matt will provide organ lessons, too, if a student can secure access to an instrument at a local church.

Private Composition Lessons
A few words from Matt:
If you have a burning desire to study with me, and do not live near the North Shore area, I am more than happy to work with you via correspondence. Unlike other internet music correspondence courses, I’ll send you personalized Quicktime video files so you can hear me discuss your work in “real time” as I play various musical suggestions at the piano for your consideration. Also, you will benefit from my body language, vocal inflection, etc. Unlike lessons in real life, our interaction will be limited; however, you can watch your personalized Quicktime files as many times as you desire. They are recorded, historical documents of our lessons.
Q. What will you look at?
A. I’m happy to look over and comment on any original works. You can e-mail or fax me your score in PDF format. The comments and suggestions I make on your Quicktime files will often have close-ups of “virtual changes” I’ve made to your scores so you can see and hear exactly what I have altered.
Q. What style does my music have to be?
A. You can send me music written in any style! I’m just as at home in the rock/pop realm as in the contemporary “serious” genre. Traditional, “Classical-ish” works are great, too; I’ll comment on everything.
Q. I don’t need composition lessons, but I want tutoring in a specific area. Can you help me?
A. Of course! If you’re enrolled in a school or college music course, your instructor may present material in a way that differs from my presentation. Sometimes it’s nice to have a second opinion or to learn about a specific musical element from a different angle. I’ll work with you to bring you up to speed in any theoretical area.
Q. What can you tutor?
A. Counterpoint, Harmony, Orchestration, Form, Figured Bass, “Dissonant” Counterpoint, Chorale Harmonization, aspects of The Schillinger System of Musical Composition, 12-Tone (Set) Theory, etc.
Q. Okay, I want to study with you! What do I do?
A. Buy a lesson or tutoring session listed below, then e-mail your score or materials to matthew@matthewmcconnell.net You’ll receive an email from "Matthew McConnell via YouSendIt" within 48 hours of submission. Click on the "download now" link and proceed to download your personal video file. Files will be available to download for seven days. I use the "YouSendIt" service so that you don't have to worry about your e-mailbox limitations. (30 minute files are approximately 30MB; 15 minute files are approximately 15MB.)
